**A Rare February Spectacle – Five Whales Off Belmar!**

Today, February 10, 2025, brought an extraordinary sight right from my deck overlooking the 10th Ave. Beach in Belmar. We spotted **five different whales**—including a magnificent finback. While none were particularly close, witnessing them in the distance was still breathtaking.

I managed to capture some **drone footage**, though I’ll need to review it to see if it’s worth sharing or just endless ocean. Either way, seeing **two pairs of whales along with a lone traveler** basking in the crisp, sunny February weather was a stunning experience. Sightings this early in the year are uncommon, but not unheard of—perhaps a sign of another incredible season ahead.

Black Friday—shopping or whale watching? For me, the choice was easy! I traded crowded stores for an unforgettable two-hour whale-watching adventure with friends, and it turned out to be a bucket list, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We set sail from **Belmar Marina** aboard the *Jersey Girl*, a spacious, comfortable boat with plenty of room to enjoy the trip. For those who wanted to stay warm, the heated cabin was a welcome retreat, while others braved the crisp November air outside, eager to spot whales.

### The Journey Begins

Our journey took us north past **Ocean Grove, Asbury Park, and Allenhurst**. At first, there was no sign of spouts as we scanned the horizon. Determined to find whales, the captain decided to turn back and explore closer to the shoreline, heading south toward Manasquan.

But we didn’t need to go far. Just off **Asbury Park and Ocean Grove**, we struck gold—or rather, whales!

### A Front-Row Seat to Nature’s Magic

We encountered not one but **two humpback whales**, and what a show they gave us! We were lucky enough to witness **three lunge feeds**, a breathtaking sight where the whales burst through the water’s surface with mouths wide open to catch fish.

One lunge, in particular, was massive, with fish scattering in every direction just ahead of the whale’s powerful move. The experience of not only seeing but hearing the feeding frenzy of these majestic creatures is something I’ll never forget. Sunday was an unforgettable day for whale enthusiasts along the Jersey Shore. From my home overlooking the ocean in Belmar, New Jersey, I witnessed an extraordinary display of nature—between 7 to 10 whales within clear view, right from the comfort of my deck. Belmar was buzzing with excitement as humpback whales and their behaviors captivated everyone along the coast.

Belmar, Spring Lake, Bay Head, and Point Pleasant were all alive with reports of whale activity on Sunday. A close friend from Avon called to share their sightings, but I didn’t even need to leave my home. The whales were everywhere, feeding close to shore as schools of baitfish moved inland.

Posting some of the day’s highlights on YouTube, I captured incredible drone footage of these magnificent creatures. One particularly memorable moment included a mother whale and her calf coming very close to shore, creating awe-inspiring scenes perfect for photography enthusiasts. Passersby on the Belmar boardwalk, many of whom are regular passengers on our Jersey Shore Whale Watch trips, marveled at the spectacle and even captured incredible photos from the beach.

It might have been the second whale we encountered earlier, but either way, it was a fantastic way to wrap up our trip. With spouts visible in the distance and so much activity around, the final whale count was somewhere between five and eight—a remarkable day on the water.

**An Epic Day Offshore on the *Jersey Girl* – November 4, 2024**

Wow, what a day! November 4, 2024, will be one for the books—our offshore pelagic trip was an unforgettable experience for everyone, including me. And thank you to everyone who made it even more special with birthday wishes and that surprise cake. I truly had no idea! It was such a thoughtful gesture, and sharing it with all of you made it a birthday to remember.

I can’t tell you how much I love bringing people out on these rare, deep-sea trips. Planning each one is a labor of love, from picking the date, mapping out the route, and setting an affordable price so as many of you as possible can join. These 12-hour journeys are truly unique, and we only get to do them a few times a year. There’s nothing like heading out in the early morning, watching the sun rise over the ocean, and feeling the excitement build as we venture into deeper waters to encounter some of the ocean’s biggest wonders.

This trip was packed with incredible wildlife. We saw 19 species of birds—including some rare finds—thanks to chumming, where we throw a mix of feed into the water to attract all kinds of seabirds. Watching them flock around us, along with the rarer species that joined in, was amazing. It’s these moments that make birdwatching offshore so special, and I love seeing the excitement on everyone’s faces as they catch sight of these rare birds.

But the highlight of the day had to be the whales. We encountered 12 unique humpbacks, and they were in rare form! These weren’t distant sightings; they came right up to the *Jersey Girl*, spraying us, rolling, and almost putting on a show. Some of these whales, familiar visitors from Stellwagen Bank up north, seemed to recognize our boat, “mugging” us as if they wanted to be close to the action. The joy and awe that filled the boat as these giants came up close was just fantastic. Moments like these remind me why I love what I do.

Even though these trips are just about break-even for us, we keep doing them because they’re so meaningful. **Unforgettable Encounters on the Jersey Shore Whale Watch – November 3rd Trip Review**

Today was one of those days where the Jersey Shore Whale Watch experience felt like pure magic. The sun rose over Belmar, casting a golden glow on the water as we set out on the Jersey Girl, our trusted vessel. The crew and guests were all smiles, eager to see what the Atlantic had in store for us on this unseasonably warm November day.

With plenty of fishing boats dotting the shoreline, we knew the fish were running, and where there’s food, there’s often whale activity. As we cruised along the beautiful coast, passing landmarks from Belmar down to Spring Lake, our first sighting of the day brought a wave of excitement. It was whale #410, a well-known individual we’ve been following for a while. This particular whale has scars from a propeller incident, visible across its back and dorsal fin—a reminder of the challenges these creatures face. Despite the scars, #410 looked healthy, actively feeding in the waters off Spring Lake.

At one point, #410 treated us to a classic lunge feed. I saw it clearly, though capturing it on camera proved tricky. The second time was even more dramatic, with fish flying into the air—a sure sign that #410 was coming up for a big meal. But just as quickly, it vanished, surfacing a bit later, as if to keep us guessing. Watching #410 survive and thrive despite its injuries was a powerful reminder of the resilience and spirit of these creatures. Everyone on board was captivated, eagerly awaiting the next move.

Our crew soon received a tip from another boat about a second whale, further east, so we set our sights in that direction. The excitement in the air was electric, as we knew that every sighting brings something unique to the trip. When we reached the area, we spotted whale #15—a much larger individual than #410. Documented for the first time in 2014, this whale is at least 11 years old and displayed its size with every surface and dive. Watching this massive whale was an awe-inspiring sight; it surfaced several times and then took a deep dive, giving us several glimpses of its tail before disappearing into the depths.

Then came the moment that truly took our breath away. We were patiently waiting for #15 to surface when suddenly, it emerged right in front of the bow, so close that we could hear the loud exhale of its blowhole. It was one of those moments you don’t forget—a split second of raw, natural power that filled everyone with awe. And just as we were marveling at this, #15 gave us a parting gift, throwing its tail high in the air before splashing down. The splash was huge! Although capturing it on camera was nearly impossible (sometimes nature doesn’t wait for the perfect shot), that memory is etched in my mind.

With the day winding down, we decided to head south and then west towards Manasquan, hoping for one last encounter before returning to Belmar. Near the Shark River Inlet, just when we thought our adventure was over, we caught sight of another whale’s blow. It was a bit to the east, and we turned to pursue it, hoping for a final close-up. It didn’t resurface, and as we glanced back towards the shoreline, we suspected it might have been #410 making its way along the coast.

Time was running out, and we began to head back, yet even on our return journey, the Jersey Shore had surprises in store. Near the fishing boats by Avon, we spotted yet another whale’s blow—a sight we would have loved to explore further if we only had more hours in the day.

Your **boarding order** is based on when you purchased your ticket, but it’s not as crucial as it would be on longer, 18-hour trips where passengers sleep onboard. This journey is all about the experience, so there’s no need to worry about securing a specific spot for rest.

### What to Wear

November mornings on the water can be **chilly**, especially as we head out before sunrise. We recommend bringing a **winter jacket** if you plan to be outside for the sunrise—it’s worth it! By mid-morning, around 10 AM, the temperature will warm up, and you’ll probably feel comfortable in a **sweatshirt or long-sleeve T-shirt**. Some might even switch to short sleeves, depending on the weather, but plan for layers to stay flexible.

A **hat** is also a good idea, and if you’re sensitive to the cold, **gloves** might help during the early hours. However, gloves with removable fingertips are best if you plan to use a camera or binoculars. Since it’s November, we don’t expect it to be too cold, so heavy winter gear won’t be necessary.

This trip is 12 hours long, so it’s important to prepare for the full day. While we provide a **light breakfast**—including **bagels, cream cheese, coffee, and tea**—you should bring your own **lunch and snacks**. We have plenty of soft drinks and water available on the boat, and we kindly ask that you leave a tip in the bucket for the crew if you enjoy them. Some passengers bring trays of cookies or other treats to share, adding to the fun and camaraderie of the trip.

Feel free to bring your **camera gear**—there will be plenty of photo opportunities! We have **electrical outlets** on board, so you can charge your batteries or download your photos during the trip. While there is **cellphone service** up to about 8 miles offshore, we also have satellite communication for safety. However, we don’t provide satellite internet access for passengers due to the high costs, so enjoy the digital detox while you’re out on the ocean.

What an incredible Friday afternoon whale-watching adventure we had on October 25, right off the beautiful coast of **Belmar, New Jersey**! The fall weather was absolutely perfect for a day out on the water—clear skies, crisp air, and calm seas. It’s truly one of the best times of year to be at the Jersey Shore, where the coastline comes alive with both marine wildlife and stunning autumn views.

Our journey began as we set sail from the **Belmar Inlet** aboard **Jersey Girl**, our spacious and comfortable whale-watching vessel. With the fall breeze gently blowing and the warm sunshine on our faces, we headed out in search of the incredible wildlife that calls these waters home during this time of year. And the day certainly didn’t disappoint!

Not long after leaving the inlet, we had our first sighting—an awe-inspiring **humpback whale**! This whale was swimming quite close to shore, giving everyone on board an exciting, up-close experience. While the whale didn’t show us its tail flukes, it surfaced several times, allowing passengers to marvel at its sheer size and grace as it glided through the water. It was a beautiful reminder of the majestic creatures that migrate through the waters of **Monmouth County** every fall.

As we continued along the coastline, we encountered an amazing group of **dolphins**. This pod was lively and playful, swimming alongside the boat, riding in the wake, and leaping out of the water. **October 23, 2024 – Whale Watching Report**

What a stunning day out on the water along the beautiful New Jersey coastline! Today, we were treated to incredible whale sightings in Bradley Beach, Asbury Park, and Deal, NJ. The coastline was absolutely picturesque, and the experience was nothing short of amazing.

On the return trip, some lucky passengers witnessed dolphins riding in the wake of our boat as we passed through the Allenhurst and Long Branch areas, giving everyone a close-up view of the oceanfront mansions that line the shore. It’s always a treat to combine the thrill of marine wildlife with the scenic beauty of our coastline.

We even spotted an osprey at the Shark River, right by the historic old Coast Guard station in Avon-by-the-Sea, adding to the excitement of the day.

Our two young humpback whales were particularly active today, feeding on the abundance of menhaden in the area. With striper fleets nearby, we remind everyone to be cautious of these magnificent creatures as they weave in and out of the boats.

It was a perfect fall day to be on the ocean, and we can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!

On Monday, we had two exciting trips! The first was a private charter where a family rented the entire boat for a shorter trip with 80 people. They had an incredible time, seeing three whales up close. The second trip was completely sold out, with 125 passengers joining us for a two-hour adventure. We left the dock at 4 p.m. and spotted three whales and over 100 dolphins! The energy on board was fantastic, and everyone had a blast.

Our afternoon whale-watching trip on **October 20, 2024**, started with plans to head east in search of some of the larger whales known to frequent the area. However, just as we were setting out, a sharp-eyed crew member spotted a whale closer to shore, prompting us to shift course. It turned out to be a different whale than the one we had seen earlier in the morning but within the same general area. This initial sighting set the tone for an exciting day of whale watching.

After spending some time with this shoreward whale, we decided to continue our original plan and headed back east-southeast in search of more activity. As luck would have it, we didn’t have to wait long before spotting another whale—this one identified as **NYC0248**.

What made NYC0248’s behavior particularly fascinating was that he was **bubble cloud feeding**. This method of feeding is incredible to watch: the whale blows a huge cloud of bubbles that frightens and traps small fish, forcing them into tighter schools. Once the fish are cornered, the whale swims straight through the bubble cloud, mouth wide open, for a feast. NYC0248 repeated this process several times, giving everyone on board plenty of opportunities to witness this rare and captivating behavior.

What made this whale even more engaging for us as spectators was the predictability of his bubble feeding. Unlike **lunge feeding**, where the whale surfaces unpredictably, bubble feeding gives a clear indicator of where the whale will surface next. Each time NYC0248 created a bubble cloud, we knew to keep our eyes trained on the area, making it easier to capture the action. At one point, he blew bubbles directly in front of our boat, swimming toward us with his mouth wide open, as if putting on a special show just for us.

Watching a whale come up through a cloud of bubbles with its mouth open, surfacing right before our eyes, was nothing short of **awesome**. The sense of awe and excitement on board was palpable as NYC0248 repeatedly demonstrated his skill, and we all marveled at the intelligence and grace of this creature.

As if that weren’t enough, the excitement continued when we spotted yet another whale—this time, **NYC0209**. She made her appearance not long after our time with NYC0248, and we spent a good portion of the trip observing her movements. While she wasn’t bubble feeding like NYC0248, her graceful surfacing and tail slapping were thrilling to witness.

The afternoon continued to unfold in a way that truly exceeded our expectations. Listening to the delighted reactions of our passengers each time a whale showed its tail, blew a bubble cloud, or surfaced near the boat was a reminder of how special these trips are. There’s something extraordinary about the shared experience of whale watching—each sighting creates a sense of collective awe that’s hard to find anywhere else.

The perfect weather added to the magic of the day. October can be unpredictable, but on this day, the skies were clear, the seas calm, and the temperatures comfortable. On Saturday, October 19, Jersey Shore Whale Watch had another fantastic trip! We headed south toward the **Point Pleasant** area and were thrilled to spot a **humpback whale** just about two miles offshore, near the buoy at the **Manasquan-Point Pleasant** border. The excitement was palpable among the crowd, especially on such a **beautiful, warm October day**. It was the perfect weather for an adventure on the water, and everyone had a great time capturing stunning photos of the whale.

As we continued our journey, we encountered a large school of **dolphins**, playfully frolicking in the surf closer to the beach near **Manasquan**. Watching these dolphins in their natural habitat added to the thrill of the day, making for an unforgettable experience. From there, we cruised along the Jersey coastline, passing through **Spring Lake** and **Belmar**, before heading back to the dock after a smooth, three-hour tour.

**Whale Watching Trip Review – Two Amazing Adventures on the Jersey Girl**

Our first trip of the day departed from **Belmar** at 9:30 AM for a two-hour adventure. The weather was perfect, with calm ocean conditions and blue skies—a gorgeous day to be out on the water. We spotted **two whales**: one in **Belmar** and the other off **Point Pleasant**. In addition to the whales, there were **plenty of dolphins** swimming alongside the boat, adding to the excitement for everyone on board. The ocean was so peaceful that many of our guests wished we could stay out longer, but we had to return to prepare for the second trip of the day.

During this trip, we cruised past several beautiful spots along the coast, including **Point Pleasant, Manasquan, Spring Lake, and Sea Girt**. It was the perfect start to an exciting day, leaving guests thrilled and eager for more!

### **Afternoon Whale-Watching Trip (12:00 PM)**
Our second trip of the day left the dock at **12:00 PM** with **about 80 passengers** on board. With the boat’s capacity of 150, there was plenty of space for everyone to move around comfortably and enjoy the views. The excitement was contagious—many passengers from the earlier trip were still buzzing about the whales they had seen, which only added to the anticipation for those heading out for the afternoon adventure.

This three-hour trip gave us more time to explore deeper waters. We first spotted a whale south of **Belmar**, then ventured a few miles offshore, working our way north along the coast. We encountered more whales off the shores of **Seabright, Long Branch, and Asbury Park**, and then came across two **breaching whales** near Belmar. Unfortunately, by the time we reached Belmar, the water started to get a bit choppy, so we couldn’t get close enough to those breaching whales to linger. But the trip was still a huge success, with fantastic sightings and happy guests all around!

My Review of Our October 9th Offshore Whale-Watching Trip – Jersey Shore Whale Watch

Words cannot express how incredible today’s offshore trip was! As the owner of Jersey Shore Whale Watch, I’ve been fortunate enough to experience countless moments on the ocean, but today’s adventure was truly something special. We headed about 40 miles offshore into deeper waters, and what we encountered was beyond what any of us could have imagined.

Our day started early with a stunning sunrise over the ocean—an experience in itself. If you’ve never seen the sun come up while being far out at sea, it’s truly a sight to behold. The way the light dances off the calm waves, combined with the anticipation of what’s to come, is a feeling that never gets old. The ocean was remarkably calm, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. It was one of those days where you’re reminded how lucky we are to be out on the water.

We were hoping for some exciting encounters, but the reality far surpassed our expectations. Over the course of the trip, we saw **13 humpback whales**, including three mother-and-calf pairs. Witnessing the whales breach, slap their flippers, and wave their tails is always breathtaking, but having them come right up to the boat, close enough to hear the roar of their breaths, was absolutely surreal. That’s an experience that stays with you long after the trip is over.

And the magic didn’t stop there. Not only did we see all these whales, but we also spotted **three sea turtles**! We had two loggerhead turtles make an appearance, but the real highlight was spotting our first **leatherback turtle**. For many of us, seeing a leatherback was a first, and it’s something I’ll never forget. There’s something incredibly awe-inspiring about seeing these ancient creatures gliding through the water.

On top of the whales and turtles, we were treated to sightings of numerous pelagic birds that you just don’t see closer to shore. Watching the birds soar and dive around us added another layer of beauty to the day, and we even spotted **tuna** jumping while we were whale watching. That had the crew and I thinking—we might just have to offer a tuna trip out here in the future!

Due to the overwhelming success and incredible sightings on this trip, we’ve decided to add more **offshore trips** to the schedule, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. These trips will now be extended to **12 hours**, giving us even more time to explore these deep offshore waters and increase our chances of spotting even more amazing wildlife. Our upcoming offshore trips are scheduled for **October 21 and November 4**, and we’re working on adding a weekend trip in November as well. We’ve been so lucky with the warm waters out there—still around 70°F—so despite the crisp fall mornings, you won’t be freezing. Plus, our heated cabin provides a cozy spot to warm up after being outside in the morning chill.

While today’s trip focused on whales, sea turtles, and birds, the sight of those jumping tuna has me seriously considering offering a specialized **tuna trip** in the near future. These trips would be a bit longer, around **18 hours**, and would allow us to focus specifically on the tuna that inhabit these deeper waters. It’s an exciting possibility, and if we do move forward with it, the cost would likely be around $400 per person. Stay tuned for more details if that sounds like something you’d be interested in!

Unfortunately, due to some upcoming wind and weather conditions, we’ve had to cancel our scheduled canyon trip, but I’m so grateful we were able to get today’s trip out last minute. The ocean continues to amaze me every time, and days like today are why I love what I do.

I also want to take a moment to mention that **all of our whale-watching is done following Whale SENSE safe whale-watching guidelines**. The close encounters we experienced today were because the whales chose to approach our boat while we were in neutral, allowing them to move freely. Our goal is always to ensure a safe and respectful environment for these incredible creatures, and that’s something we take very seriously.

**Jersey Shore Whale Watch Trip Report**

Yesterday’s whale-watching trip was one for the books! We were fortunate enough to see two humpback whales during our adventure. The first was spotted off Avon-by-the-Sea, putting on a spectacular display for everyone on board. Later, we encountered the second whale near Point Pleasant, thrilling passengers with its graceful surfacing and tail slaps. In addition to these majestic creatures, we were treated to the sight of hundreds of dolphins along the way. They were especially active in Spring Lake, Belmar, Avon, and Manasquan, delighting everyone with their playful behavior as they swam alongside the boat.

Our journey took us from the Shark River down to Point Pleasant and back up the coast to Ocean Grove before returning to the dock at the beautiful Belmar Marina. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, with clear skies and calm waters, making it a truly memorable trip. The guests were absolutely thrilled by the abundance of marine life and the stunning views of the New Jersey coastline.

We’ll be running whale-watching trips through early December, as the whales are still plentiful in the area thanks to an abundance of baitfish. I haven’t been on many whale-watching trips this year. My skin doctor advised me to avoid the sun more than I have in the past, and managing the business has also kept me busy. As a result, I haven’t been on the boat as much as I usually love to be. But today was different—I made sure to get on board, and I’m so glad I did.

We had about 80 people on the trip, which is a perfect-sized crowd, and wow, what an experience it was! We saw two whales—three humpback whales—and on the way back near the area around the Deal New Jersey , our naturalist, Danielle, became 95% sure that we spotted a North Atlantic right whale. as she was looking at her photos in the cabin after we spent five minutes with the well, she said you know that well wasn’t acting like a humpback whale. I’m not sure if that was a humpback whale. I got a really look at these photos and then with big smile and she’s face The journey began .

At first, we just thought it was another whale, so we stopped to take a closer look. When Danielle reviewed her photos, she alerted the crew, saying, “OK, turn around. We need to confirm if this is what I think it is.” The whale was elusive, possibly spooked by our presence, and it may have dived into deeper waters. But we spent an extra hour trying to get another sighting.

Everyone on board was thrilled to have seen not only humpback whales and a minke whale but also the rarest of them all—a North Atlantic right whale, which we haven’t seen in four years. It was truly an unforgettable trip!

The whale breached and tail-slapped more than 30 times, offering everyone a breathtaking view of its playful nature. Families on the boat were thrilled, and as we cruised home at sunset, the excitement was palpable. The afternoon sun was blazing as we set sail from Belmar Beach, NJ. **An Up-Close Encounter with Our First Whale**

Our journey soon rewarded us with a remarkable encounter. As we approached a promising area, we spotted our first humpback whale. This magnificent creature was swimming gracefully, diving, and occasionally showing its tail. It performed subsurface lunges, indicating its presence by surfacing beyond a bait ball. The sight of fish leaping in an attempt to evade the whale was a vivid reminder of the ocean’s vibrant ecosystem.

The whale showcased its unpredictability by surfacing right next to the left side of the bow, giving us a front-row view of its rostrum, blowholes, dorsal fin, and tail. Passengers captured incredible photos without the need for zoom, as the whale was so close. The sound of its powerful exhalations was mesmerizing, leaving us all in awe of its presence.

After spending time with this incredible whale, we continued our journey northward, searching for more. Although we couldn’t find another whale in that direction, our persistence paid off as we discovered another humpback off the coast of Asbury Park. This particular whale has been a frequent visitor this summer and is known for its unique behavior.

Unlike the first whale, this one rarely showed its tail but delighted us by raising a flipper, revealing part of its underside. It was a subtle yet fascinating glimpse into the world of these majestic creatures. The excitement on board was palpable, with children and adults alike sharing in the joy of these extraordinary sightings.

## A Whale Watching Adventure to Remember

You knew it was going to be one of those incredible trips when we headed east to where the whales have been plentiful since Sunday. The excitement started building as we navigated the waters, hoping to catch sight of these magnificent creatures.

Our first encounter wasn’t with a whale but a sea turtle gliding by the boat. It was a serene and beautiful sight, setting the tone for the rest of the trip. As we continued, we spotted Wilson’s Storm Petrels and Shearwaters, their graceful flight adding to the maritime charm of the day.

The water was getting choppy, but that didn’t deter us. We looked around and saw multiple spouts in each direction. It was exhilarating to know that whales were all around us. The scent of whale breath wafted through the air at least once, a reminder of how close we were to these giants of the sea.

At one point, the action was so fast-paced that we found ourselves exclaiming, “What was that?” Trying to take it all in was a challenge, but it was a delightful one. Out on the water, we felt nice and cool, a stark contrast to the 100-degree “feel like” temperature on land.

The real magic began when we first saw one whale, then two swimming together, then three, and finally four whales swimming together. It was a breathtaking sight, a dance of giants in the ocean. Among them, we spotted a whale mom and her calf, a heartwarming sight that added a special touch to the trip.

There were several close encounters with the whales as they swam near the boat. One whale even “trumpeted” with a very loud exhale close to us, a sound that resonated deeply. We watched in awe as different whales breached, tail-slapped, and threw themselves out of the water. The spectacle was so overwhelming that we didn’t know which way to look, with whales to the right, left, and ahead of us.

The atmosphere on the boat was electric, with people applauding the whales’ performances. It was a moment of pure joy and admiration for these majestic creatures. A six-year-old and his brother summed it up perfectly when they said, “This was the best day ever,” their faces alight with wonder as they pointed out the whales.

We got wet from the waves, but it only added to the fun. The cool splash of the sea was refreshing, and we laughed, reveling in the experience. The camaraderie among the passengers was palpable as we met people from around the state and even other states, all bonded by the shared wonder of nature.

 

Oh, what a whale-watching trip it was! By the end, we weren’t sure how many different whales we had seen. It seemed like about eight to ten, with four swimming together at once. Each sighting was unique and thrilling, a testament to the richness of marine life off the Jersey Shore.

#### 12:30 Trip: A Whales’ Extravaganza

Our afternoon trip began at 12:30 PM. We set out from Belmar Marina, eager to encounter the magnificent humpback whales. Initially, we headed north past Asbury Park’s beautiful beaches, aiming to locate a whale that had been spotted earlier. While we couldn’t find that particular whale, our perseverance paid off. As we continued our journey, we spotted a whale spouting in the distance. Just as we headed towards it, another whale appeared much closer to us!

Though the closer whale quickly disappeared, we redirected our attention to the one further away. To our delight, it turned out to be not one, but two whales engaging in synchronized lunge feeding! These were whales #267 and #146, a pair that had been feeding together for over a month. We witnessed some truly spectacular lunges as they fed in perfect harmony.

As we made our way back to Belmar Marina, the excitement wasn’t over yet. Off the coast of Deal, NJ, another humpback whale made an appearance, adding to the thrill of the day. Our passengers were treated to multiple sightings, each more exhilarating than the last. But the surprises didn’t stop there. On our way out, we also encountered a sea turtle swimming alongside the boat, adding an extra touch of wonder to our trip.

### An Unforgettable Whale Watching Experience

Our third trip of the day brought us to an incredible sight: 10 different humpback whales on our afternoon dolphin trip! The fantastic summer season of whale watching just keeps getting better and better.

#### The 4:30 Trip

For our 4:30 trip, we headed east out of the inlet. Although thunderstorms were around, we moved away from them, and they started to weaken. Our strategy worked out perfectly. We had some rain, causing most people to go inside to stay dry. As we approached our target area, the sun emerged. Danielle, our naturalist, informed us that we were only a few minutes away from our destination. Moments later, we spotted a humpback whale, followed by two more—a mom and her calf that we had seen earlier in the spring. It was thrilling to see how large the mom was!

There were many whales present. At one point, we had whales at the 5 o’clock, 3 o’clock, and 12 o’clock positions. Each one was doing something exciting, making it hard to decide which to watch. The little children on board were especially delighted. One little boy, eager to see dolphins, was told to keep watching since whales and dolphins sometimes swim together. He was content and continued watching the whales.

We saw a group of three whales and many more throughout the trip. It was truly a lot of whales! Another amazing aspect was the number of birds around, likely looking for food near the whales.

The ocean was the place to be on this beautiful day. While it soared to 100°F inland, the temperature on the ocean was a perfect 70°F. Some passengers even found themselves needing a sweatshirt!

As the day continued, our evening trip at 5 PM brought unexpected excitement. A friend called me, “Bill, there’s a whale off 16th Avenue Beach in Belmar.” Without hesitation, I contacted our captain, who was just about to enter the Bradley Beach area. I instructed him to turn south towards Belmar and Spring Lake. Originally set for a dolphin tour, our lucky passengers received a bonus—whales and dolphins at sunset!

Twenty fortunate passengers found themselves on an almost empty boat, enjoying a breathtaking sunset, whales, and dolphins aplenty. It was the perfect way to start the weekend, and we’re thrilled to have shared it with them.

**Embark on an Unforgettable Whale Watching Adventure with Jersey Shore Whale Watch**

Sometimes, you just have to seize the moment, and that’s exactly what we did on Thursday, June 20. At 12:30 PM, we embarked on a whale watching adventure that turned out to be one of the most memorable trips ever. The previous night, we had heard reports of around 100 whales spotted between Little Italy and further out towards the Triple Wrecks—an area we’ve visited many times. Though typically an 18-hour round trip, we decided to venture into this new location, hoping for an incredible experience.

Leaving Belmar, New Jersey, we set our sights on Little Italy, an area about an hour and a half away. The decision proved to be worthwhile. Within just half an hour of arriving, we encountered a very active humpback whale in the crystal-clear blue waters off the coast of New Jersey. It was truly awe-inspiring to be only 25 miles east of Belmar and Manasquan Beach, yet feel like we were in the Caribbean. The water was exceptionally clear and beautiful, making for stunning photos that all passengers loved.

 

The weather was absolutely perfect. We started the day in the hot beach weather of Belmar, and as we moved out to the ocean, it became refreshingly cool. Amazingly, 24 miles offshore, the ocean temperature was a warm 71°F, which was considerably warmer than onshore. This range of temperatures added to the thrill of the day, and everyone on board was delighted by the fantastic conditions.

Our planned three-hour trip extended to 4.5 hours, thanks to our dedicated crew who ensured everyone had the thrill of a lifetime. The trip was filled with excitement and lifelong memories, especially for the many regular passengers and first-timers who were thrilled to see their first humpback whale. In addition to the humpback, we also spotted a minke whale, making the day even more special.

**Father’s Day Celebration on Jersey Shore Whale Watch: A Memorable Experience**

Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible dads! This special day was made even more memorable by the many fathers who joined the whale watching trip with Jersey Shore Whale Watch. As we set off from the dock, a couple approached us, remembering Sandy and me from last year. Their story quickly came back to me—they celebrate their wedding anniversary with a whale watching tour, and this year, they celebrated both their anniversary and Father’s Day on our boat.

Our journey began with a northward course, navigating through choppy seas with a bit of wind. The sky was adorned with wispy clouds, and we were treated to the sight of osprey flying overhead. Unfortunately, we also spotted numerous balloons floating in the water. Seeing so many balloons—numbered ones, happy birthday balloons, and even a gold-colored one—was disheartening. It was too rough to retrieve them today, but I hoped that neither the turtles nor the whales would swallow them.

As we approached Monmouth Beach, the excitement began. The anniversary lady suddenly exclaimed, “It jumped out of the water!” and pointed eastward. I caught the end of a whale breach—an exhilarating sight! The boat quickly turned, and we managed to track the whale, although it was challenging as it stayed submerged for more than five minutes at a time. This whale turned out to be #318, which we had seen about half a month ago. Its unique dorsal fin made it recognizable, even though we didn’t get a clear view of its tail.

After spending some time observing whale #318, we decided it was time to head back. But before we could return, we were delighted by the appearance of some dolphins, adding another layer of excitement to our trip. The dolphins’ playful antics provided a perfect end to our Father’s Day adventure.

## An Unforgettable Whale Watching Adventure:

A Scene Set for Adventure
Today was unlike any other whale-watching trip I’ve ever experienced. We had heard whispers of fin whales about 10 miles east of Sea Girt, so we set out with high hopes. Little did we know, we were about to encounter a spectacle beyond our wildest dreams.

 

### An Ocean Full of Life
As we ventured further, we found ourselves surrounded by a sea of humpback whales. We counted at least 20 individuals, including a mother and her calf. They were everywhere, displaying every possible behavior. We even witnessed bubble feeding, a coordinated effort where two or more whales drive fish to the surface. My expectations were already high, having heard that it was like a National Geographic special out there, but what we saw surpassed anything I could have imagined.

### The Day Unfolds

Wednesday’s trip was special. I had been telling everyone in my morning videos that this was the day to go. We planned to explore a different area, known for its abundance of humpback and finback whales. As we started our seventh year of whale watching out of Belmar, New Jersey, I returned home to tell my wife that today was the best trip we’ve ever had. She was surprised because I had said the same thing just a few days earlier. But today was truly extraordinary.

Whales Everywhere
Everywhere we looked, there were whales. Every 20 seconds, we saw a spout, either close by or in the distance. Deciding which way to point the boat was a challenge because every direction offered something spectacular. We ended up just setting the boat in the middle of the action and watched in awe as whales surrounded us. The weather was perfect, and the conditions couldn’t have been better.

 

### A Day for the Record Books
We saw every behavior a humpback whale could exhibit: feeding, bubble feeding, breaching, and slapping. A mother and her young calf were among the highlights, and we captured some fantastic footage. I even brought my drone, something I rarely do, because we had fewer people on the boat than usual. This allowed me to safely launch and land the drone, capturing incredible aerial footage of the whales feeding and breaching.

### The Best Day Yet
Passengers on this trip were spoiled by the experience. The bar has been set incredibly high, and it will be tough to surpass. Long-time guests recognized how special this day was, and even first-timers were amazed. One family drove all the way from Indiana, having missed out on a previous trip due to a cancellation, and they were thrilled.

What an unforgettable experience we had on our Saturday, June 1st, whale watching trip with Jersey Shore Whale Watch! The day was filled with excitement and wonder as we ventured north, exploring the beautiful waters near Sandy Hook and Long Branch.

Our journey began with anticipation, and it didn’t take long before we were rewarded with the majestic sight of not just one, but several whales. The first whale we encountered was an incredible spectacle. As we approached, we witnessed it lunge feeding, an awe-inspiring behavior where the whale propels itself towards a school of fish, mouth wide open, capturing its meal in one swift motion. The whale then came close to our boat, and we were treated to the thrilling sight of it throwing its massive tail around. The sound of the tail hitting the water was thunderous, echoing around us and adding to the excitement of the moment. This magnificent creature repeated this display several times, leaving us all in awe.

But the excitement didn’t end there. Our keen-eyed guide, Sandy, spotted a second whale in the distance. This one, too, was engaged in lunge feeding. The scene was surreal, as we observed the coordination and grace with which these whales fed. It seemed there was even a third whale in the vicinity, as sightings were popping up all around us. From seeing no whales at the start to encountering three, the day turned into a whale watcher’s dream.

Adding to the natural spectacle were several ospreys, diving gracefully into the water and emerging with fish for their dinner. These birds of prey put on quite a show, enhancing our already thrilling day on the water.

The trip was not only about the wildlife; it was also about the wonderful people we met. We reconnected with many friends from past trips and made new ones along the way. One woman on this trip shared that she had been on countless whale watching trips in other places and had never seen a whale until now. Here is a report on Friday’s extraordinary whale-watching trip. We left the dock and headed north towards the Deal and Long Branch areas. As we approached, we noticed a lot of Manhattan baitfish, a great sign that whales were nearby since their food source was abundant.

When we reached Monmouth Beach, we spotted the spout of a humpback whale in the distance, about half a mile away. We followed it up to Sea Bright and were treated to the sight of this magnificent whale. Although I missed capturing a couple of full breaches on my camera, I did manage to catch them on the boat’s security camera, which I’ll share with you later. I also captured a video of another breach through the window while inside the cabin, filming a different perspective of the passengers outside.

As we headed back, we were thrilled to find another humpback whale, which breached and fed 30 to 40 times. This unexpected encounter made us late returning to the dock, but everyone was delighted. It was a beautiful, sunny day with calm ocean waters and perfect T-shirt weather.

This trip exemplified the Jersey Shore Whale Watch experience that we hope everyone can enjoy. On Sunday, May 19, we embarked on a whale watching trip off the Long Branch Beach area. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and the weather was perfect, with summer-like temperatures adding to the enjoyment. Our group was excited to be back on the water, and the conditions couldn’t have been better for a day of whale watching.

As we set out, the anticipation was high. Not long into our journey, we spotted a whale. The sight of such a magnificent creature so close to the shore was breathtaking. The whale’s presence set the tone for the rest of the trip, and we knew we were in for an exciting afternoon.

But the whale wasn’t the only highlight. We also encountered a large group of dolphins. Approximately 50 dolphins were swimming playfully in the water, not far from where we were. It was an incredible sight to see them so close to the shore, only about a mile off the beach. The dolphins were active and put on quite a show, leaping and swimming alongside our boat. Their playful antics delighted everyone on board and added a sense of wonder to the trip.

The entire experience was filled with action and excitement. Being out on the water, surrounded by such amazing marine life, was truly special. It felt great to be back in the natural environment, enjoying the warmth of the sun and the cool breeze of the ocean. The combination of good weather, calm seas, and abundant wildlife made for a memorable outing.

On Mother’s Day morning, under uncertain skies and amidst cancellations from other fishing boats and tour companies, we at Jersey Shore Whale Watch made a bold decision to proceed with our voyage. Many of our guests had traveled great distances—from places as far-flung as Rochester, Binghamton, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and upstate New York. As we set sail at 12:30 PM, a light drizzle was falling, but by the time we reached the open waters, the drizzle had ceased. Although the ocean presented a choppy welcome for about 20 minutes, it soon calmed, and within moments of the sea settling, we were graced with the presence of an active juvenile humpback whale just off the coast of New Jersey.

For approximately 45 minutes, our guests were treated to a magnificent display: the whale demonstrated its lunch feeding, tail slapping, and fin slapping—truly a remarkable performance that captivated everyone on board. During the trip, we also encountered three different pods of dolphins, which provided additional delight and photo opportunities for our 45 guests.

For those seeking warmth, the boat’s cabin, equipped with heating and two full bathrooms on the second floor, offered a cozy retreat. With a capacity for 130 passengers, the spaciousness felt extra special with just 45 on board, making for a more intimate and enjoyable experience.

Opening day at Jersey Shore Whale Watch was an adventure to remember! Despite the cool, grey weather with a chance of showers, a spirited group gathered, eager to start the season. My day began humorously as I was anointed by a seagull—a sign of good luck, they say!

As we cruised north, anticipation built until Danielle, our knowledgeable naturalist, spotted a whale before we reached Long Branch. We watched eagerly for its reappearance, but it remained elusive. Pushing further north, our persistence paid off. Near Long Branch, we were thrilled to witness a whale tail thrashing and lunge feeding close to the shore. The excitement was palpable—it could have been the same whale Danielle initially spotted.

The show continued with the whale breaching magnificently three times in front of our boat, much to everyone’s amazement. The mystery deepened as we speculated whether we were seeing one or two whales. Soon enough, we discovered it was two; one performed energetically ahead, while another glided gracefully right beside us, rolling over to reveal its flippers. The captain wisely kept the boat in neutral to ensure the whale’s safety, giving those at the front a spectacular view.

 

Passengers got some awesome photos, and also got to see bubble net feeding!

 

Amid more lunge feeding and tail thrashing, our aquatic friend seemed to perform just for us. As our journey neared its end, we didn’t have to venture far back. Although Danielle pointed out some dolphins, I stayed focused on the whales, not wanting to miss a moment.

For many, it was their first time on the ocean or whale watching, including passengers who had just arrived from India. What a splendid welcome they received! They, along with everyone else, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

December 8th whale watching trip report Fin Whale

During our recent boat trip, we had the incredible opportunity to witness the majestic presence of two magnificent whale species: the humpback whale and the fin whale. Our memorable encounter with the fin whale took place just off the shores of Long Beach Island, specifically near the charming coastal resort town of Beach Haven, situated north of Atlantic City. The beauty of the coastal landscape added to the awe-inspiring experience.

As we reflect on this remarkable outing, we’re excited to share that there are more adventures on the horizon. In the upcoming fall season and throughout the following year, we plan to embark on longer, more immersive journeys. These excursions will take us further south, exploring areas renowned for their rich marine life. Our upcoming trips will typically last between 4 to 6 hours, offering a delightful half-day of whale watching. It’s important to clarify that when we mention “half day,” we refer to the daylight portion of the day, not half of the 24-hour day.

We had a rare no whale sightings Sunday and we cut the trip a little short as it was raining pretty well, so everyone that was on the trip gets a free trip next spring in 2024

On Saturday, November 25, we embarked on another eventful whale watching trip. Initially, we headed south towards Bayhead but unfortunately did not encounter any whales there. We then changed course and moved north, where we were rewarded with the sight of a very active humpback whale near Bradley Beach. We invite you to join us this Sunday for one of the final trips of the year. Our future outings will be highly dependent on the weather, especially with the colder temperatures, so don’t miss this opportunity to come out with us on Sunday, November 26, for whale watching.

We had an incredible whale watching experience on Friday, November 24. Departing from the marina in Belmar, we were unsure of what we might encounter, especially since no whales were spotted from Belmar Beach that morning, which had me slightly apprehensive. However, having witnessed five whales from my home deck on Thanksgiving Day, I remained hopeful.

Our optimism paid off splendidly. Shortly after reaching Manasquan Beach, where other boats had reported whale sightings, we quickly found ourselves amidst three whales. Over the next three hours, we were fortunate to follow four different whales, making for an exceptional and exciting trip. Everyone on board captured fantastic photos, and the heated cabin with its large windows provided a cozy spot to watch the whales and then step outside to hear their blows and see their magnificent lunch feeding and tail displays.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this trip was that all the whales we encountered were new to us, different from those seen the previous Sunday. This variety highlights how each whale watching day offers a unique experience.

“Our Sunday Funday reached new heights as we encountered five different humpback whales, an experience beyond my expectations. Our location was between Bradley Beach and 16th Ave. Belmar. Witnessing whales from my deck all morning had set my hopes high, but I never imagined we’d see such an extraordinary display. We observed these magnificent creatures feeding, lunging, rolling around, tail slapping, and performing a bubble roll. It was truly amazing and a reminder that with whales, you can never predict what will happen next.”

We headed south towards Island Beach State Park today

It was a beautiful, sunny day with a calm ocean, making it the perfect opportunity for an enjoyable whale watching trip. We dressed in layers to stay comfortable and set off towards the area where we had previously spotted whales. However, before reaching our destination, we came across a lively group of dolphins, which provided us with a lot of entertainment.

After our delightful dolphin encounter, we continued our journey south, passing by Sea Side without any luck in spotting whales. Disappointed but not discouraged, we decided to turn back. To our delight, near Lavalette, we encountered the same whale we had seen last weekend. While we didn’t witness any feeding behavior this time, we had the chance to see its tail several times during deep dives. There were also some splashes in the vicinity that may have been caused by bluefin tuna, adding to the excitement.

The trip was very enjoyable, and some of our fellow passengers chose to stay inside the cabin with heaters, while others preferred to stay outside. The colors of the clouds with the sun shining through were truly breathtaking, adding to the overall beauty of the experience. Another memorable trip was added to our collection, and we eagerly look forward to our next adventure.

On Sunday, November 5th, a group of approximately 35 people gathered for an exciting Jersey Shore Whale Watch adventure. We set sail from the Shark River Inlet, heading south toward Lavallette, and little did we know that this trip would turn into a truly exceptional experience.

Our journey was graced by the presence of a very active humpback whale. What set this encounter apart was the whale’s behavior – it was open net feeding, a rare phenomenon seldom witnessed in New Jersey waters. While I had seen plenty of photos capturing this behavior in Maine, actually observing it firsthand was a first for me, and it left an indelible mark on our memories. Throughout the trip, we were fortunate enough to witness this remarkable spectacle multiple times.

Adding to the magic of the day was the picture-perfect weather that Mother Nature provided us. The clear skies and gentle breeze made the experience even more enjoyable. And, of course, the enthusiastic and engaged crowd on board added to the overall sense of excitement and wonder.

I want to take a moment to applaud Captain Eddie for his outstanding job running the trip. His expertise and passion for marine life enhanced our understanding of the humpback whale’s behavior and made the excursion all the more engaging.Danielle was excellent as always spotting the whale

As the trip came to an end, I couldn’t help but reflect on the beauty of nature and the incredible moments we had just witnessed. The ocean has a way of humbling us and reminding us of the vast and mysterious world beneath its surface. It was a day that will be etched in our memories for a long time to come.

Now, I eagerly await Monday morning when I can sort through all the photos I took during the trip. I plan to share a collection of these images to help others appreciate the awe-inspiring sight of a humpback whale engaged in open net feeding off the Jersey Shore.
