The young calf, just learning to throw its tail, swim through the ocean, and feed off its mother until October, is a rare and precious spectacle. Today, we were fortunate enough to witness this extraordinary event once again.

This sighting is rare because once the calf reaches about one year old, it separates from its mother and they are usually never seen near each other again. During this crucial time, the mother teaches the calf essential survival skills for life in the ocean. It’s truly amazing to observe this natural bond and learning process.

 

For many years, we have gone without seeing such a pair, but this year has been exceptional. We’ve seen five or six different mother-calf pairs, each sighting more incredible than the last. It’s truly a magical experience.

Today’s trip was nothing short of spectacular! We had known there were whales in the area for a couple of days, and as we ventured out 8 miles from the shore, we were met with an awe-inspiring sight: whales galore! Everywhere we looked, there were spouts of water. We documented 10 whales today, including a mother and her calf.

The whales put on a magnificent show, displaying behaviors like breaching, tail throwing, and lunge feeding. The ocean was calm, and with temperatures at a pleasant 72°, our crowd of just over 50 people had an unforgettable time.
