🐋 September 19 Trip Report: The Whale Union Sent Us to Rockaway!
Humpback whales on BOTH Saturday trips aboard the Jersey Girl!
Despite what we thought were productive negotiations with the Whale Union, their morning representative decided to report for duty much closer to Rockaway Beach than Sandy Hook. Apparently, our agreement didn’t include a meeting location. 😂
Our sold-out first trip became one of our longest runs of the year in terms of distance. On a serious note, this is why you go whale watching with people who do it full-time. Our captain put in the miles—and we burned plenty of fuel—to make sure our passengers got their opportunity to see a whale.
With the whales’ whereabouts becoming less predictable lately, we had built an hour between Saturday’s departures. The first trip ran about 3½ hours, leaving us 30 minutes to unload, get everyone aboard for the next trip, and get underway again. Once you account for passengers getting off and on, the crew had about ten minutes to get the boat ready.

The sunset trip left at 4 p.m. and returned around 6:30 p.m. Thankfully, that group saw a humpback about 12 miles closer than the whale we visited earlier. That was a welcome relief for the crew—and the fuel tanks!
Thank you to the whales for a great show. We had happy passengers on both trips, including people fulfilling a lifetime dream of seeing their very first whale. Watching those reactions never gets old. ❤️

Seeing “rain” in the New York forecast doesn’t necessarily mean it will be raining where we’re watching whales. We pay close attention to ocean conditions, and our current expectation is that Sunday’s ocean will be more comfortable than Saturday’s. Forecasts can change, and we’ll keep watching them.
A little rain in the forecast also tends to mean lighter crowds. Plus, the Jersey Girl has indoor seating where you can get out of the elements.

And yes, we’re still doing this while paying $6.06 a gallon for diesel at the boat. A longer run like Saturday morning’s is a real commitment—but so is giving our passengers the experience they came for.
