Once again, the whales are up near the Sandy Hook area — and it all comes down to the bait fish.
Humpback whales love bunker, and as long as the bunker remain concentrated along the northern New Jersey coast, that’s where we expect the whales to stay. So on Tuesday, August 25, we made our way north aboard the Jersey Girl and were rewarded with two humpback whales — one near Sandy Hook National Park and another on our way back south.
I always think of the return portion of a whale watching trip as the second half of a football game. Sometimes the second half is even more exciting than the first, and yesterday was a perfect example.
Just when everyone thought we had already had a great trip, another humpback surprised the entire boat with repeated feeding behavior. The crowd absolutely roared. There is nothing quite like hearing nearly 100 people react at the same time when a whale suddenly appears right in front of them.
A special shout-out to Shakira and her son, who traveled all the way from Washington, D.C. to join us. They were rewarded with not one, but two humpback whales!
Here’s something incredible to think about: only a very small percentage of people in the world will ever see a whale in the wild. Yesterday, nearly another 100 people got to experience something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.
