Black Friday—shopping or whale watching? For me, the choice was easy! I traded crowded stores for an unforgettable two-hour whale-watching adventure with friends, and it turned out to be a bucket list, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We set sail from **Belmar Marina** aboard the *Jersey Girl*, a spacious, comfortable boat with plenty of room to enjoy the trip. For those who wanted to stay warm, the heated cabin was a welcome retreat, while others braved the crisp November air outside, eager to spot whales.

### The Journey Begins

Our journey took us north past **Ocean Grove, Asbury Park, and Allenhurst**. At first, there was no sign of spouts as we scanned the horizon. Determined to find whales, the captain decided to turn back and explore closer to the shoreline, heading south toward Manasquan.

But we didn’t need to go far. Just off **Asbury Park and Ocean Grove**, we struck gold—or rather, whales!

### A Front-Row Seat to Nature’s Magic

We encountered not one but **two humpback whales**, and what a show they gave us! We were lucky enough to witness **three lunge feeds**, a breathtaking sight where the whales burst through the water’s surface with mouths wide open to catch fish.

One lunge, in particular, was massive, with fish scattering in every direction just ahead of the whale’s powerful move. The experience of not only seeing but hearing the feeding frenzy of these majestic creatures is something I’ll never forget. It’s incredible how close to the beach these whales were—proof that they follow the food wherever it goes.

Sunday was an unforgettable day for whale enthusiasts along the Jersey Shore. From my home overlooking the ocean in Belmar, New Jersey, I witnessed an extraordinary display of nature—between 7 to 10 whales within clear view, right from the comfort of my deck. Belmar was buzzing with excitement as humpback whales and their behaviors captivated everyone along the coast.

Belmar, Spring Lake, Bay Head, and Point Pleasant were all alive with reports of whale activity on Sunday. A close friend from Avon called to share their sightings, but I didn’t even need to leave my home. The whales were everywhere, feeding close to shore as schools of baitfish moved inland.

Posting some of the day’s highlights on YouTube, I captured incredible drone footage of these magnificent creatures. One particularly memorable moment included a mother whale and her calf coming very close to shore, creating awe-inspiring scenes perfect for photography enthusiasts. Passersby on the Belmar boardwalk, many of whom are regular passengers on our Jersey Shore Whale Watch trips, marveled at the spectacle and even captured incredible photos from the beach.

With time ticking away, we decided to venture past the inlet and head further south toward Spring Lake. This area has been known to surprise us, and we were eager to see if today would be one of those days.

Our persistence finally paid off near the Essex and Sussex. A pod of dolphins appeared, playfully swimming alongside the boat. Watching these intelligent creatures in their natural habitat is always a joy, and our passengers were thrilled to capture photos and videos of their acrobatics.

As we enjoyed the company of the dolphins, Danielle, one of our crew members, spotted something extraordinary—a Minke whale right in front of the boat! Excitement filled the air as we approached carefully, allowing everyone onboard to get a good look. The Minke surfaced a few times, giving us the chance to admire its sleek form and graceful movements before it disappeared beneath the waves.

As we moved closer to shore, our patience paid off. We spotted another whale nearby and stayed with it for a while. Suddenly, another whale popped up even closer to us, so we shifted our attention to this new visitor. It was mesmerizing to watch it surface and dive, providing an up-close experience for everyone onboard.

The surprises didn’t stop there. After this whale disappeared, we noticed two more spouts in the distance and headed their way. To our delight, we ended up with three whales swimming alongside the boat for an extended period. Witnessing these giants of the ocean so close was an unforgettable moment.

As we began making our way back, the ocean had one final treat for us. We spotted another whale near the shore. It might have been the second whale we encountered earlier, but either way, it was a fantastic way to wrap up our trip. With spouts visible in the distance and so much activity around, the final whale count was somewhere between five and eight—a remarkable day on the water.

**An Epic Day Offshore on the *Jersey Girl* – November 4, 2024**

Wow, what a day! November 4, 2024, will be one for the books—our offshore pelagic trip was an unforgettable experience for everyone, including me. And thank you to everyone who made it even more special with birthday wishes and that surprise cake. I truly had no idea! It was such a thoughtful gesture, and sharing it with all of you made it a birthday to remember.

I can’t tell you how much I love bringing people out on these rare, deep-sea trips. Planning each one is a labor of love, from picking the date, mapping out the route, and setting an affordable price so as many of you as possible can join. These 12-hour journeys are truly unique, and we only get to do them a few times a year. There’s nothing like heading out in the early morning, watching the sun rise over the ocean, and feeling the excitement build as we venture into deeper waters to encounter some of the ocean’s biggest wonders.

This trip was packed with incredible wildlife. We saw 19 species of birds—including some rare finds—thanks to chumming, where we throw a mix of feed into the water to attract all kinds of seabirds. Watching them flock around us, along with the rarer species that joined in, was amazing. It’s these moments that make birdwatching offshore so special, and I love seeing the excitement on everyone’s faces as they catch sight of these rare birds.

But the highlight of the day had to be the whales. We encountered 12 unique humpbacks, and they were in rare form! These weren’t distant sightings; they came right up to the *Jersey Girl*, spraying us, rolling, and almost putting on a show. Some of these whales, familiar visitors from Stellwagen Bank up north, seemed to recognize our boat, “mugging” us as if they wanted to be close to the action. The joy and awe that filled the boat as these giants came up close was just fantastic. Moments like these remind me why I love what I do.

Thank you to everyone who came out and shared this incredible experience with us. It’s a privilege to bring people out to witness nature like this, and seeing your excitement makes it all worthwhile. Even though these trips are just about break-even for us, we keep doing them because they’re so meaningful. We’re already planning a few more for next year, including a massive 18-20 hour trip out to Hudson Canyon. **Unforgettable Encounters on the Jersey Shore Whale Watch – November 3rd Trip Review**

Today was one of those days where the Jersey Shore Whale Watch experience felt like pure magic. The sun rose over Belmar, casting a golden glow on the water as we set out on the Jersey Girl, our trusted vessel. The crew and guests were all smiles, eager to see what the Atlantic had in store for us on this unseasonably warm November day.

With plenty of fishing boats dotting the shoreline, we knew the fish were running, and where there’s food, there’s often whale activity. As we cruised along the beautiful coast, passing landmarks from Belmar down to Spring Lake, our first sighting of the day brought a wave of excitement. It was whale #410, a well-known individual we’ve been following for a while. This particular whale has scars from a propeller incident, visible across its back and dorsal fin—a reminder of the challenges these creatures face. Despite the scars, #410 looked healthy, actively feeding in the waters off Spring Lake.

At one point, #410 treated us to a classic lunge feed. I saw it clearly, though capturing it on camera proved tricky. The second time was even more dramatic, with fish flying into the air—a sure sign that #410 was coming up for a big meal. But just as quickly, it vanished, surfacing a bit later, as if to keep us guessing. Watching #410 survive and thrive despite its injuries was a powerful reminder of the resilience and spirit of these creatures. Everyone on board was captivated, eagerly awaiting the next move.

Our crew soon received a tip from another boat about a second whale, further east, so we set our sights in that direction. The excitement in the air was electric, as we knew that every sighting brings something unique to the trip. When we reached the area, we spotted whale #15—a much larger individual than #410. Documented for the first time in 2014, this whale is at least 11 years old and displayed its size with every surface and dive. Watching this massive whale was an awe-inspiring sight; it surfaced several times and then took a deep dive, giving us several glimpses of its tail before disappearing into the depths.

Then came the moment that truly took our breath away. We were patiently waiting for #15 to surface when suddenly, it emerged right in front of the bow, so close that we could hear the loud exhale of its blowhole. It was one of those moments you don’t forget—a split second of raw, natural power that filled everyone with awe. And just as we were marveling at this, #15 gave us a parting gift, throwing its tail high in the air before splashing down. The splash was huge! Although capturing it on camera was nearly impossible (sometimes nature doesn’t wait for the perfect shot), that memory is etched in my mind.

With the day winding down, we decided to head south and then west towards Manasquan, hoping for one last encounter before returning to Belmar. Near the Shark River Inlet, just when we thought our adventure was over, we caught sight of another whale’s blow. It was a bit to the east, and we turned to pursue it, hoping for a final close-up. It didn’t resurface, and as we glanced back towards the shoreline, we suspected it might have been #410 making its way along the coast.

Time was running out, and we began to head back, yet even on our return journey, the Jersey Shore had surprises in store. Near the fishing boats by Avon, we spotted yet another whale’s blow—a sight we would have loved to explore further if we only had more hours in the day.

Today’s trip was a testament to why we’re the only dedicated whale-watching service in Belmar. With sightings of multiple whales, including our familiar friend #410 and the impressive #15, every moment brought new wonders and fresh excitement.
