Why I Put That Kind of Money Into the Jersey Girl — And What You’re Getting Because of It

People ask me all the time — Bill, why did you invest that heavily in a boat that was already running?

Here’s your answer. A new boat like the Jersey Girl — 101 feet, Coast Guard certified, capable of carrying a full passenger load offshore — costs somewhere between 9 and 13 million dollars. And then you wait two years for it to be built. I was a few million dollars short of that plan so we went a different direction.

Three brand new Scania engines. 700 horsepower each. 2,100 horsepower total. New air intake system, new exhaust system, new shafts, new bearings, new electronics throughout. The mufflers alone are three feet by four feet — three of them. It’s a fabrication job most people never think about when they step on a whale watching boat.

What this means for you as a passenger is simple. The Jersey Girl can go wherever the whales are. No limitations. No compromises. If the whales are 30 miles out, we go 30 miles out. It’s going to be like stepping onto a brand new boat.

The Coast Guard examines every square inch before she goes back in the water. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to at Jersey Shore Whale Watch and it always has been.
