A Note from Bill
There are times when I really stop and ask myself — as I move into the later years of my working life — do I still want to invest this much time, money, and energy into running a full-time whale watching business?
It’s a question that comes up now and then, especially after long weeks on the water. Running Jersey Shore Whale Watch takes a lot — maintenance, weather worries, crew coordination, and endless hours. But then days like today remind me exactly why I do it.
We took out a school group this morning, and not long after the trip, their teachers sent a letter and photos thanking us. Reading their words, seeing the smiles — that’s when it hits me: this is about more than just running a business. It’s about creating experiences that stay with people.
Today’s students saw multiple groups of dolphins racing alongside the boat and even spotted a sea turtle drifting near the surface. We don’t see whales on every trip — the ocean has a mind of its own — but we always guarantee that if you don’t see a whale, you’ll get free return tickets to come back. Every trip is different, and that’s what makes it so special. The ocean writes its own story every day, and we just get to be a part of it.
It’s moments like these — hearing the laughter, watching people’s eyes light up when they spot wildlife for the first time — that remind me this isn’t just a job. It’s something that truly makes a difference in people’s lives.
