As we headed out of the inlet on the **Jersey Girl**, we were greeted by perfect conditions—a clear sky and calm waters that promised an exciting day of marine life sightings. Following reports from our earlier trip, which had already spotted two whales not far from the inlet, we **set our course north** towards Asbury Park. From the moment we left, we knew it was going to be a special trip.
### **Whale Sightings Around Asbury Park**
As we cruised along the coast, we soon spotted not one, but **two spouts near Asbury Park**. Our amazing naturalist, Danielle, was quick to identify one of these whales as the same individual from our morning trip—a fantastic example of the importance of marine conservation and monitoring! However, these whales were a bit tricky to follow. They dove deep, staying underwater longer than usual, and resurfaced much further away. That’s the beauty and unpredictability of whale watching—every encounter is unique!
Just as we decided to move on, one of the whales **breached in the distance**, putting on a spectacular show as if to say goodbye. Breaching is always a breathtaking sight, and even from a distance, it’s impossible not to feel the thrill when a 40-ton whale launches out of the water.
### **Possible Minke Whale Sighting**
We continued heading north along the coast, with our journey taking us towards **Sea Bright**. Along the way, we may have spotted a **minke whale**, which surfaced briefly next to the boat before disappearing as quickly as it came. Minke whales are smaller and faster than humpbacks, so these encounters are always fleeting—but they add a sense of excitement to the trip.
### **The Journey Back: More Whale Sightings and Playful Waves**
On our way back, we were in for another treat. We came across what was likely the **same two whales** we had seen earlier near Asbury Park. To our delight, **another whale surfaced further east**, though the increasing wind and rising swells made it a bit harder to follow. The change in weather didn’t dampen the mood, though—if anything, it made the trip even more fun!
One of the highlights of the trip was seeing a whale **breaching multiple times** in the distance. Breaching is one of the most exciting behaviors to witness, and even from afar, it was a thrill for everyone on board. The strong **southerly winds** created some decent-sized swells, which only added to the adventure.
While the adults focused on spotting whales and marveling at the **rainbows glistening in the waves**, the **children on board had an absolute blast**. They took full advantage of the swells, getting splashed by the water and laughing uncontrollably. Watching their joy was infectious—many of us secretly wished we could join in and embrace the moment just like them! Unfortunately, I had to resist the urge to get wet to keep my **camera safe from the saltwater spray** (a trade-off every photographer knows too well).
### **Incredible Wildlife Sightings: Whales, Birds, and Bluefin Tuna**
In addition to the whales, today’s trip offered a fantastic variety of marine life and birds. We spotted several **Northern Gannets**—large seabirds known for their dramatic dive-bombing hunting style. We also saw **osprey** and a flock of **scoters**, which added to the rich wildlife experience.
The highlight for many passengers was catching a glimpse of a **giant bluefin tuna**—a rare and exciting sight that always leaves an impression. Tuna sightings are an extra thrill during our offshore trips, and today’s encounter reminded us just how diverse the ocean is.
