The Tall Ships Are Coming to New York Harbor — Here’s What to Expect From the Water
This is a once in a lifetime event. I was in grade school during the Bicentennial in 1976. I remember it. I never actually saw the tall ships. This time I’m not missing it — and neither should you.
Sail 250 is bringing historic tall ships from around the world into New York Harbor this July. Jersey Shore Whale Watch is running official trips out of Belmar for the parades and the fireworks and we have dates from June 30th through July 7th.
Here’s what you actually need to know before you book.
We get within 50 to 100 yards of the ships depending on which ones they are. At 100 yards you can fit the entire ship in your camera frame — any closer and honestly the photo doesn’t work. Think of it this way: 100 yards is about the distance from where I was standing on my deck to the sand on the beach behind me. Close enough to feel it.
July 3rd afternoon we’ll be in the East River for the Class B tall ships parade. As soon as that wraps up we use those powerful new engines and head back down to Belmar — and that same evening we’ll be out for the Asbury Park fireworks. Two events, one day.
July 4th morning we leave at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. from Belmar. Coast Guard wants us in position near the Statue of Liberty by 6:00 a.m. That morning you’ll see the Blue Angels, a naval review of over 200 military aircraft from around the world, and the USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier. Bring your camera. Seriously.
That evening we go back up for the NYC fireworks — East River, Hudson River, and the Brooklyn Bridge all at once. You’ll get home around 1:00 a.m. Worth every minute.
July 6th morning is already sold out. A couple of camps booked the entire boat to bring kids out to see whales and tall ships together. We may add an afternoon trip that day and we have the 7th available as well. The ships don’t leave for Boston until July 11th.
Tickets are selling fast. These are not regular whale watching prices — July 3rd and 4th are premium trips and they are filling up.
