August 16, 2025 Whale Watching Report – A Day of Dolphins, Whales, and Pure Excitement
Today’s 4:30 PM whale watching trip aboard the Jersey Girl was one of those unforgettable afternoons that remind us why we do this every day. From the moment we left Belmar Marina, there was a sense of anticipation in the air. Passengers scanned the horizon, cameras in hand, wondering what amazing wildlife encounters the ocean would bring. None of us were disappointed.
Dolphinpalooza – A Once-in-a-Season Sight

Keywords: dolphin pod NJ, Jersey Shore whale watching, Belmar dolphin tours, ocean wildlife New Jersey
Just minutes after we reached open water, the ocean came alive. Suddenly, a massive pod of 100+ dolphins surged to the south in what we call a “stampede.” Families and children gasped as the dolphins leapt out of the water in unison, racing and splashing with incredible energy. It was a true #Dolphinpalooza—breaches, belly flops, and playful close approaches that had everyone leaning over the railings to catch the best view.
For many on board, this was their first time seeing dolphins in the wild. One guest turned to us and said, “I never imagined I’d be this close to so many dolphins at once—it feels like they’re welcoming us into their world.” Moments like this are what make whale watching in New Jersey so special. You don’t just see the wildlife—you feel part of it.
The Surprise Guest – Humpback Whale NYC0086
As if the dolphins weren’t enough to make the trip unforgettable, the ocean had another surprise waiting. Out of nowhere, a humpback whale surfaced right next to the boat! The massive splash drew cheers from the entire crowd, and before long, we identified this whale as NYC0086, a familiar friend cataloged by our partners at Gotham Whale.
This particular whale has been spotted multiple times along the Jersey Shore this season, and today it seemed eager to show off. Guests watched in awe as the whale surfaced, exhaled, and dove again with powerful grace. Cameras clicked nonstop. Some lucky passengers even caught the perfect shot of its fluke rising out of the water.
For those who have never experienced it, having a humpback whale surface within sight of Belmar Beach is a truly magical moment. It’s a reminder that the waters right here in Monmouth County are full of life and wonder.
The Calm Before the Storm
While today was picture-perfect for whale watching, we know the ocean is about to change. A distant hurricane offshore will not reach New Jersey directly, but it will send heavy swells our way for several days. That means Sunday, August 17th, is your best chance to get out on the water before the waves arrive.
We are planning trips at 9:30 AM, 12:15 PM, and possibly 4:30 PM. After that, conditions may keep us off the ocean until late in the week. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to go whale watching, tomorrow is the day.
Why Choose Jersey Shore Whale Watch?
At Jersey Shore Whale Watch, we don’t just run boat rides—we create experiences. Unlike fishing boats that offer part-time tours, we are the only full-time whale watching company in New Jersey, and we guarantee that if you don’t see a whale, you get a free return trip. Our crew includes naturalists and marine photographers who share insights about the animals we encounter, so every trip is as educational as it is exciting.
We sail aboard the Jersey Girl, a 120-foot boat with indoor and outdoor seating, a snack bar, handicap accessibility, and plenty of room to relax. Families, seniors, photographers, and adventurers alike have called our trips the highlight of their summer.
