A Breaching Bonanza and Rare Seabird Sightings Off the Jersey Shore
What a spectacular day we had out on the water! June 19, 2025, will go down as one of the most thrilling trips of the season for both whale watchers and bird enthusiasts alike. Just off the coast of Belmar Beach, New Jersey, we encountered an incredibly active juvenile humpback whale that put on a jaw-dropping show—breaching nearly 20 times!
Passengers aboard the Jersey Girl were treated to a front-row seat as this energetic whale launched itself out of the water again and again, offering photographers and nature lovers the experience of a lifetime. Seeing a whale breach even once is thrilling—but seeing it happen 15 to 20 times in a single trip? That’s the kind of rare, unforgettable display that makes whale watching at the Jersey Shore so special.
But the excitement didn’t end with the whale activity. The skies above were just as lively. We spotted dozens of great shearwaters and Cory’s shearwaters, two pelagic bird species that are typically found far out to sea. It’s rare to see these birds so close to shore, making today’s sightings a major highlight for our birdwatching guests. These elegant seabirds soared effortlessly around the boat, diving and gliding as they searched the surface for food.
This kind of pelagic bird activity suggests that ocean conditions are ideal right now, with lots of baitfish and cooler waters drawing in both marine mammals and offshore bird species. The synergy between the whales and the birds is a clear sign that the local marine ecosystem is buzzing with life.
We departed from the Belmar Marina, but throughout the trip we cruised along the beautiful New Jersey coastline, with views of beach towns like Avon-by-the-Sea, Bradley Beach, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Spring Lake, Sea Girt, and Manasquan. These scenic shore communities offer the perfect backdrop to a day of ocean adventure, and they’re all just a short drive away for locals and tourists alike.
For those of you who missed today’s trip—don’t worry! The ocean is alive and teeming with surprises. Our next whale and wildlife tour departs tomorrow at 11:30 AM, and we have multiple trips running this weekend. Whether you’re a whale enthusiast, a bird photographer, or just someone looking for a unique escape from the ordinary, there’s never been a better time to come aboard and experience the magic of the Jersey Shore.
