While sightings of North Atlantic right whales are rarer due to their critically endangered status, they have been observed in the area. For instance, in November 2020, a right whale was spotted just 1.5 miles off Asbury Park, NJ.

Trip Report: Sunday, December 1, 2024 3 Humpback whales today

**Trip Report: Sunday, December 1, 2024**

On a cold yet sunny Sunday, December 1, we departed from the Shark River Inlet and headed north toward Avon-by-the-Sea. Since we had seen 10 humpback whales near Ocean Grove and Asbury Park on Saturday, we decided to check that area first. However, we didn’t spot any whales or baitfish up to Asbury Park. We continued north to Deal but still had no luck, so we decided to turn around.

Cruising back south past Belmar into Spring Lake, we reached Manasquan. There, we spotted a young humpback whale and spent about five to seven minutes observing it. Then someone exclaimed, “Look out east! There are two big whales blowing about a mile and a half out. Let’s go see them!” Our naturalist, Danielle Brown—who has been with us for seven years—guided us out to two large, very active humpback whales. Here are some photos from today’s trip.

We only have a couple of weeks left in the season, and future trips will be dictated by how many passengers are willing to brave the cold weather. We’re hoping to do an eight-hour trip next weekend or the following one to see some of the larger whales, and maybe even spot North Atlantic right whales not too far offshore. Thanks, everyone—it has been an amazing season that’s really drawing to a close. As I’ve always said, the whales will stay in the area longer than the passengers can tolerate the cold weather, and today was definitely a test. But everyone was able to go outside the cabin to see the whales, then come back inside to warm up with free hot chocolate and coffee before heading out again. It was a great day.
